The Read

The partnership always ran on contrast: Ronnie Dunn’s high, ringing voice doing the heavy lifting, Kix Brooks handling the swagger and the crowd. The catalog splits neatly between boot-scooting uptempo material and ballads with more melancholy in them than the format usually permits. “Neon Moon” is the proof — a genuinely sad song that a stadium full of people sing anyway. Bridgestone is a hockey arena and it will sound like one, which is the tradeoff for seeing this catalog at full scale. Expect a long set, a lot of production, and a crowd that spans three generations of country radio listeners. The people who were in college for the first run are bringing their kids now, and both groups know the words.

Layla Vartanian opened it in 1997 — the only female-owned independent bar on Lower Broadway. While everything around it plays country radio, Layla's books bluegrass, hillbilly, rockabilly, Americana. Vintage license plates on the ceiling. Better drink prices than anything near it.
