The Read
Bright Eyes records are catalogs of nerve — the shaky voice, the too-many-words verses, the arrangements that pile up strings and horns until the song nearly buckles. What has changed over twenty-five years is control. Oberst still sings like he might come apart, but now it is a decision rather than a condition. Brooklyn Bowl is a large club rather than a theater, which puts the crowd close and loud. A lot of this audience has been carrying these songs since high school, and the singalongs land somewhere between celebration and group therapy. Expect a long set, a shifting band, and at least one song that goes off the rails on purpose.
