The Read

The writing is confessional and structurally simple, and the delivery is where it becomes enormous — that break in the voice on the way up to the high note is the whole engine. The Hanseroth twins have been beside her for the entire run, which is why the harmony arrangements sound worked-out rather than assembled. She is also, reliably, one of the best talkers between songs in the business. Bridgestone is a hockey arena, and the interesting question with a show like this is what she does with the quiet material inside it. Historically the answer is to make twenty thousand people shut up, which is more impressive than any production cue. Expect covers, expect guests in a city like this one, and expect at least one moment that works better than it has any right to at that scale.

Layla Vartanian opened it in 1997 — the only female-owned independent bar on Lower Broadway. While everything around it plays country radio, Layla's books bluegrass, hillbilly, rockabilly, Americana. Vintage license plates on the ceiling. Better drink prices than anything near it.
