The Read
Beartooth’s material sits between metalcore and straight-ahead heavy rock, and its subject matter has been consistent from the start: depression, sobriety, self-loathing, and the effort of getting through another year of it. Shomo writes, produces, and largely records the thing himself, which is why it sounds so single-minded. Live, it is closer to a group exercise than a performance. The holiday-weekend Saturday slot means a room full of people who have been in a house with family for four days. Truth is big and will be very loud. Expect a floor that opens up within the first two songs and a crowd that treats every chorus as permission. Not subtle, not trying to be, and unusually well-timed for this particular weekend.
