The Read
Amyl and the Sniffers came out of Melbourne playing pub rock sharpened into something meaner, and the records are good, but the band exists live. Taylor works a stage like a boxer between rounds, and the songs are short enough that the set never gives you a place to rest. Behind her, the band plays with the unglamorous competence of people who learned in small rooms. A Tuesday is an odd slot for a show that runs this hot, which usually improves it — the crowd that shows up on a school night is the crowd that actually wanted to be there. Expect a pit, expect the front rail to be a commitment, expect it to be over faster than you want. Punk shows are better when they end early.
